June Volunteer Spotlight

Tell us a bit about yourself and how you got involved in project management.

  • Hey there, my name is Saakshi Nand and I am a part of the marketing team for PMI-SVC. I got involved in project management when I took a class about it as an elective in college. I had thought it was a skill and not a separate profession. I was surprised to find project management was a career path that could be available to me!

What aspect of project management are you most passionate about?

  • I think there is a lot about project management that I am passionate about so it’s hard to say which one is the best. If I had to choose, I think I really like the team collaboration aspect. I love to meet and work with a diverse range of people, I find myself becoming more knowledgeable and effective.

What role do you currently play as a volunteer with PMI, and what does that involve?

  • My title is social media coordinator. I usually work with the marketing team to produce graphics for LinkedIn and write posts if needed. I also am able to pick up projects that someone else might not have the time for! Anything marketing related, I probably am helping or am aware of.

What has been the most rewarding part of volunteering with PMI? How has volunteering with PMI contributed to your personal or professional growth?

  • I feel like the most rewarding part of volunteering with PMI is seeing the conclusions of the work we do. It feels good to work on advertising and setting up events then to see everyone come it and enjoy. It’s nice to know that I helped in the creation of that event! Through volunteering, I have met a lot of people. I feel as if volunteering makes it easier to network and get to know people on a more personal level. You also are able to see a wide range of people in different careers advising on their experiences.

What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a PMI volunteer? (Why should someone join PMI? Why should they volunteer for PMI?)

  • I think the advice I would give to people contemplating on volunteering is to join if you are free and available. It can be quite fun at times, and you’ll be able to grow deeper personal relationships with individuals in the project management career path. It doesn’t hurt to have a larger, professional network! And if you don’t have your PMP certificate and are looking to get it, volunteering counts for the experience requirement to take the exam! What aspect of project management are you most passionate about?
