Tom Carlos: Volunteer of the Quarter - October 2024 to December 2024
Tom joined PMI Sacramento Valley Chapter back in 2002, the same year he earned his PMP certification. At the time, he was seeking networking opportunities and exploring career possibilities that aligned with his background. He credits PMI-SVC for providing him with a platform to connect with others and gain valuable insights into the project management field.
Tom has made a tremendous impact as the Consultant & Contractor Forum Chair, where he has led numerous forums over the years to help project management professionals network and connect. His leadership has fostered meaningful discussions and valuable opportunities for members to share insights and build their professional networks.
Over the years, Tom has discovered that volunteering is about much more than giving time—it’s about fostering long-lasting relationships. He fondly reflects on the friendships he’s built since 2002, many of which he considers lifelong. These connections have also helped him grow professionally, expanding his knowledge of project management and leadership.
When asked what he enjoys most about volunteering, Tom shares:
"Being a volunteer for the Chapter has given me the opportunity to meet hundreds of people, stay connected with the chapter's activities, and ensure we continue providing the knowledge and services that were so beneficial to me."
Tom encourages members to think beyond traditional networking:
"You are not just giving your time; you’re contributing to an organization that will enhance your skills, expand your knowledge, and introduce you to people you might not otherwise meet. Focus on relationship-building—it’s incredibly rewarding."
In retirement, Tom has been keeping busy with his passion for music. He’s working on elevating his guitar skills and enjoys tinkering in his electronics lab, where he repairs and restores vintage guitar amplifiers—a true "mad scientist" at heart! When not immersed in music, he’s tackling home improvement projects as a self-proclaimed “Home Depot Junkie”.
