Volunteer of the Quarter - Nathan Champion

  1. When did you first join PMI-SVC?  I first joined PMI-SVC on September 12, 2022.
  2. What were you looking for when your joined?  I was getting ready to retire from the military and I was looking for a new community of people to network with professionally and provide mentorship and insight into civilian project management.
  3. What have you learned (professionally and personally) through your volunteering journey? I have learned a lot about the subtle nuances between military and civilian working teams. I have also learned a few new project management tools, and finally I gained a lot of confidence and validation that the skills I developed through my military service are valuable in civilian industry.
  4. What do you enjoy most about being a volunteer for the Chapter? I have really enjoyed working, learning, and having fun with other members. Attending the Leadership Institute Meeting in San Diego, and developing connections with PMI members from across North America was a blast! I have also really enjoyed working with a group of our chapter members to organize a Project Management Career Fair for the community and our members!
  5. Please complete this sentence: Being a volunteer for the Chapter has given me the opportunity to: meet others and grow my network in an organic and meaningful way with genuine personal connections.
  6. What would you advise PMI-SVC members that are considering volunteering? Volunteer in an area that you are internally motivated to volunteer in and search out leaders who will empower you . You could be motivated because you want experience in a particular function, like marketing, data analytics, or IT; or you could be motivated to meet people and share your experience and help mentor others. You might be motivated to coach or help others study and learn the technical mechanics of project management; or you may be interested fin sharpening your process improvement skills. Whatever your motivations, make sure you have fun, this is volunteering after all.
  7. What do you like to do in your spare time?  I got the band back together and I enjoy playing drums with my longtime friends and bandmates as well as my son, who recently joined us on bass guitar; I enjoy watching the 49’ers with my soon to be wife and cousins, aunts and uncles; and, I enjoy traveling and camping any chance I can get!
