Volunteer Spotlight of The Month

  1. Tell us a bit about yourself and how you got involved in project management.
  • Hi, my name is Freedom, and I am a second-year college student attending Sac State. I’m majoring in Communication Studies and a minor in Business which has led me to hear about PM. Then, I took an Intro to PM class and realized my interests and personal habits align well with the responsibilities of a PM. I also like how PMs are needed in every industry.

 2. What aspect of project management are you most passionate about?

  • I’m still pretty new to project management, but one thing I’ve really gotten into is using Excel to do cost-benefit analyses. I love playing around with spreadsheets and trying out different formulas and scenarios to see how they might affect a project’s budget or timeline. It’s fascinating to figure out where the money goes and what trade-offs might be worth it in the long run. Even though I’m still learning a lot, I think this aspect of project management really speaks to me because it combines organization, problem-solving, and a little bit of math—which I find super satisfying!

 3. What role do you currently play as a volunteer with PMI, and what does that involve?

  • I’m on the Marketing team as the project manager. I help organize and track our tasks and assist with creating marketing materials.

4. What has been the most rewarding part of volunteering with PMI? How has volunteering with PMI contributed to your personal or professional growth?

  • The most rewarding part of volunteering with PMI is growing my network and strengthening my relationships, especially as a young person and college student. Being an active volunteer with PMI brings me contentment and makes me feel like I’m a part of something big and impactful.

5. What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a PMI volunteer? (Why should someone join PMI? Why should they volunteer for PMI?)

  • Because PMI focuses on various industries—from tech to construction to healthcare—volunteering gives you a peek into different types of projects. This can help you figure out which areas spark your enthusiasm and align with your long-term career goals, especially as a young person.
