Journeys in Project Management

I became a project manager early in my career when I was placed into a supervisor position for a section that had just incredibly failed a large inspection. I used project mangement principles to systematically initiate, plan, and execute changes to our operations resulting in a swing from failure, to exemplary. This was the first stepping stone in my career to later program management positions.

Becoming a Project Manager

I became a Project Manager by conducting audits for Risk Management, and drafting scope of works for policy and RFP’s for the Department of Conservation. However, I did not realize at the time that the work I was performing in the military (U.S. Marines: 1995 – 1999) fell in the Project Management field. My first project was in the military when I was charged with preparing our motor pool of 65 assets for the Field Supply and Maintenance Analysis Office (FSMAO) inspection while serving in the Marine Corps. I had to meet milestones by conducting inventory (Initiation), ordering parts from overseas (Procurement/Planning), managing the combat readiness status of each asset (Monitoring) and prepare a final report (Deliverable)

Project Specializations

Showing others how to implement project management processes and seeing their "ah-ha" moments as they get excited to improve our organization is my favorite thing about being a project manager.

Favorite Part of Being a Project Manager

My favorite part about being a Project Manager is seeing each phase unfold as we move through the process. I enjoy being able to face challenges along the way and pivot as we need to so our objective is still met.
